So we returned to Marrickville, but this time with a few new places to keep it interesting. We started at the ever-so-popular Cornersmith, a place we didn't get to go on our last Marrickville visit. Look how busy it was! The first to arrive, Kelly, put her name down for a table for 8 at 10am and we got to sit down at about 11. The place was filled with rich aroma of coffee, sometimes a whiff of toast or whatever that happens to come past. Not many desserts on offer but enough sweet breakfast to feast on while we sipped our coffees.
Lime and polenta loaf with 'quark' and candied lime was different, unusual, and noice; Grapefruit and tangelo marmalade was packed with flavour that only home made jam would have; citrus tart was mouthwateringly tangy; but the favourite was the rosemary roasted grapes with ricotta and fennel infused honey on white sourdough, scrumptious and healthy!
Moving on, a second shot of caffeine at Double Roasters. By now it was blissfully warm, so it was great to be sitting inside, in the warehouse, in the shade. Here we didn't have a lot of sweets to choose from, but rather a selection of lovely drinks (tea, coffee, frozen or hot).
Very tasty peanut butter "blondie", Persian orange slice, deliciously gooey chocolate and caramel slice. And that heavy duty suction of that thick drink - that was their iced coffee, which should really be consumed with a spoon. [KT: Of note was the double shot of coffee with icy tonic water!]
Following a languid walk to burn off some of the calories consumed, we arrived at Miss Petty Cash, where 2 years ago I had a brioche French toast with Belgian chocolate ganache and hazelnut praline. There wasn't much else to choose from, and it was too late (and we were too full) to have the pancakes.
But alas, it wasn't on the menu! How devastating ... and with not much to choose from, we ended up having some cool drink, and a very rosy rose friand.
And we haven't finished! I couldn't fit any more in, but Athena Cake Shop came highly recommended, in fact it made us change our plan as the initially intended Greek sweet stop that was to be the Hellenic Club.
Rather than the baklavas and the usual syrupy sticky sweet pastries, my companions seem to have purchased profiteroles, cannoli and little creme-filled pastries ... hm, not quite Greek but I might still prefer these over the sweets of Hellenic Club.
A perfect autumn day, beautiful food and company, yet again. Unfortunately I will be absent for the April DDT event as I will be over 10000km away or something. In Paris. I'm so sorry I'll miss the next DDT ......
